A customer in Walton-on-Thames contacted me because an outbuilding door would no longer stay shut unless it was locked. After I provided a quick quote by phone, they asked me to attend as soon as possible.
As an external door, it had been exposed to the elements and the small sashlock was heavily rusted. It also appeared not to have been lubricated over the years, which had not helped. By this stage, cleaning and lubrication would not have revived it. The latch was travelling too far beyond the faceplate and becoming stuck inside the lock case instead of re-engaging, indicating that something had broken or bent out of shape. Given the lock’s age, deterioration and the price of the replacement part, repairing the old case was not economical on this occasion.
I fitted a new sashlock case from stock, restoring the door to normal operation. I also applied Würth lubricant to the lock and handles to improve their movement, despite the remaining rust on the handles and to give the new lock a good start in service.
Brilliantly subtle that product placement. Still waiting for them to get in touch and offer some stickers at least, or to ask to stop using their products. Whichever one comes first only time will tell 😂
