Locksmith stories 006 - Front Door Replacement

A customer in High Wycombe HP11 contacted EPRLocksmith to replace their front door. The old one had a rotted corner, and they wanted to reuse the existing mortice sash lock but fit new handles. The frame, they said, was fine — just the door needed replacing.

After removing the old door, I measured the frame. The height was perfect, but the width told a different story — a quarter‑inch difference from top to bottom. This meant extra work to ensure a perfect fit.

 I spent at least 1 hour carefully planing and chiselling the new door until it fit perfectly, to the point where the original hinge marks were no longer visible. While at it, I upgraded the hinges to BSEN‑compliant ones, replacing the old internal‑door type hinges that were rusty and not designed for exterior use and definitely not  for the weight of this hardwood door.

 Although this was the first door that took over two hours to fit, the result was worth it. The customer now has what might be the strongest, most level door in all of High Wycombe — secure, functional, and built to last.
