 A customer in Staines-upon-Thames (TW18) rang me about a front door that had become increasingly difficult to lock. The door would close, but only just, and with considerable effort. After I explained the repair costs, he gave me the go-ahead. 

 Once I removed the mechanism from the door, I realised I didn’t have the correct bit for the security screws. As I was only five minutes from home, I took the mechanism back to my workshop to work on it there. 

 With the cover removed, the fault was immediately obvious. I explained the issue to the customer, and he chose a repair rather than a complete replacement. Fortunately, I had an identical gearbox in stock with a different fault, so I salvaged the working component and fitted it into his mechanism. 

 Everything was reassembled, refitted, and tested. The door now locks smoothly — though, as with all mechanical parts, only time will tell how long this fix will last.
