 After she's been on furlough for almost a year, on a warm sunny day, my wife announced: “We need a garden bench and table!” I replied with a firm “No, we don’t”… but, as usual, I lost that battle. 

 Two days later, she produced a photo of the garden furniture she wanted. It looked fantastic — until I saw the price tag, which nearly gave me a heart attack. That’s when the “Garden Furniture Project” began. I sourced plenty of rough‑sawn timber from friends and acquaintances, bartered for pizzas and beers — and, conveniently, found an excuse to buy a few new tools without getting told off. 

 Using 80‑grit and 120‑grit sandpaper, I prepared the wood before cutting it to size. Once painted, I assembled everything with plenty of timber screws. The build took four exhausting days, fuelled by several beers and a lot of elbow grease. 

 The benches and table turned out beautifully, sturdy enough to last for years, with the added satisfaction of knowing they were built by hand.
